Since basements often lack windows, they can feel very cave-like. If you have usable space in your basement, it’s important that the space feels inviting so that people actually want to spend time down there.
Here are some tips to brighten up your basement:
- Bring in natural light. Basements with walk-out access shouldn’t have too much trouble building windows into the basement. These basements are typically built inside of a hill on one side, which allows for ground-level access and can fairly easily incorporate windows. For basements completely underground, though, consider building window wells high up at the ground level.
- Bring in even more light. Eliminate the cave-like vibe by installing recessed lighting in the ceiling. Create architectural niches with direct lighting in them. Place standing lamps in every corner and lamps on end tables. It’s impossible for a brightly-lit room to feel like a dungeon.
- Avoid dull colors. Gray and beige won’t help brighten up your basement. Incorporate bright colors that remind you of the outdoors. Warm golds, oranges, and even rust shades will bring life into your basement. Don’t skimp on the area rugs, wall décor, and accessories.
- Exaggerate the height. Basement ceilings are often low, so create an optical illusion of height by painting the ceiling a shade lighter than the wall color.
When it comes to the design of your basement, brightness will go a long way. Don’t sacrifice logical updates to your basement in favor or design, though. Ensure your basement walls have been waterproofed, that window wells are clear of debris, and that your sump pump is functioning properly.
