Energy Efficiency Tips

Aug 9

From the refrigerator and the dish washer to the AC and lights, your home is constantly using energy. Don’t let your electric bill become a problem. Save money by going green. Making your home energy efficient doesn’t have to cost a fortune. Some simple projects will go a long way, including:

  • Insulate windows and doors. Improperly-sealed windows and doors let cool air escape, which causes your air conditioner to work overtime, using more energy than it should to maintain a comfortable temperature. Weather strip your windows and doors to save energy and money.
  • Change your AC filters. Dirty air conditioner filters block the air flow, which again makes the system run overtime to achieve a comfortable temperature. Swap out the filter for a clean one and the unit won’t have to work as hard.
  • Buy different light bulbs. Light emitting diodes (LED) lights and compact fluorescent lamps (CFLs) use less energy and last up to 10 times longer than regular light bulbs. Save money on the energy and save time by not changing out your light bulbs as often.
  • Turn down the hot water heater. There’s no need to run the hot water heater on high all day and all night. If you turn the temperature down by 10 degrees, you won’t feel a difference, but you’ll feel the savings on your bills.
  • Replace your windows. If your windows are old, you should invest in energy efficient windows. Insulating glass minimizes the transfer of air from inside and outside your home. The windows pay for themselves when it comes to the energy and money savings.
