Old is New Again: Furniture Painting Tips

Dec 7

Painting older furniture in your home is a great way to save money and revamp your home at the same time. You can add a personal touch to your rooms by upgrading an old or oddly colored piece of furniture with just a fresh coat of paint.

That old piece of furniture can become a rejuvenated focal point with just some fresh paint and a little TLC. Read the following instructions to learn how to paint your furniture yourself:

  • Prep your furniture first. Like all other paint projects, prepping your furniture is one of the most important steps. Without proper prep work, the paint will peel. First, give your furniture a good cleaning. This is especially important if it has been sitting around for a while. Use soap and warm water.
  • Sand furniture. Sand your piece of furniture to get the glossy finish off. This ensures the paint is able to grab to the surface. There’s no need to sand until you reach raw wood; just continue sanding until the glossy surface has been removed.
  • Prime the furniture surface. For a smooth, even finish and a paint job that will last for years, use primer. Once your furniture is dry and free of dust, paint on some primer. Priming helps paint adhere to the furniture better. Oil-based primer works well on furniture.
  • Paint with a semi-gloss finish. Semi-gloss paints are easy to clean, whereas flat paints show dirt or fingerprints easily. Paint two to three coats and allow drying time between each coat. Between each coat of paint, sand the finish.

Save money and refinish older furniture this season instead of buying new. If you use the proper painting technique, that old furniture can transform your home.
