When you buy a home, you inherit the style of the former owner – whether you like it or not. Since the kitchen is the heart of the home, homeowners will typically invest their money in remodeling the kitchen right away. This leaves families stuck with outdated bathrooms featuring trends from decades we’d rather not remember.
You don’t have to spend a ton of money to update your bathroom, though. Porcelain tile, for example, can be painted for an updated look. Here’s how:
Supplies:
- Tile primer
- Synthetic paint brush
- Fine sandpaper
- Natural bristle paint brush
- Gloss paint
- Scrub brush
Process:
- Clean the tile thoroughly with warm, soapy water. Use a small scrub brush to get the grout clean. Rinse with clean water and dry completely.
- With a synthetic paint brush, paint a coat of tile primer using long, even, vertical strokes. Let the primer dry for several hours.
- Sand the entire primed area with fine-grit sandpaper. Wipe up the dust with a lint-free rag.
- Paint another coat of primer, let it dry, and sand again.
- Apply gloss paint with a natural bristle brush, painting over the grout once first and then covering the entire area with even, vertical strokes.
Keep in mind that painting tiles in your shower stall or bathtub is not recommended, as the heavy amount of water will result in peeling paint.
