Moving is an exciting time for any family, but it can also be incredibly frustrating. Make the transition less stressful on you and your family by following these moving tips:

Before you leave:

1. Set aside documents. Have one file folder with birth certificates, passports, your marriage license, etc. Don’t pack this away to be shipped during the move, though. These items should remain with you just in case.
2. Organize the chaos. 3. Pack a First Night Kit. Odds are you won’t be completely unpacked for your first night in your new home. Pack a separate box of everything you’ll need to get through that first night, including toilet paper, shower essentials plus a shower curtain, bottled water and snacks, a flashlight and batteries,
4. Keep kids comfy. Make sure each child has his or her own bag packed with special toys, blankets, or books that they will need to go to bed at night. Keeping up with nighttime habits will help them through the moving transition.
5. Prep the post office. Fill out forms for change of address and mail forwarding.

Once you arrive:

1. Assess the situation. Do a walkthrough of the house and determine if you need additional shelving or closet systems. Don’t start unpacking everything until you’ve made those purchases.  It will make unpacking go much more smoothly, and you’ll only need to do it once.
2. Label with sticky notes. Avoid family frustration by putting sticky notes on cabinets and drawers so that everyone knows what goes where.
3. Evaluate your possessions. Since insurance companies will often limit the amount of time you have to file a claim, go through every box to look for anything that may have been damaged in transit. Also take note of anything that may be missing.
