Secure Breakables – China, crystal, glass figurines, and any other breakables should be wrapped with plenty of tissue paper or newspaper. You can also use other items you’re going to store to protect these fragile pieces, such as towels or bed sheets. Always line the bottom of every box with crumbled paper to provide cushioning.
Remember Heavy on the Bottom – Place your heaviest items on the bottoms of the boxes. Make sure not to overload boxes though. If they are full of many heavy items, your smaller and more fragile items will crack or be crushed from heavier items no matter how much wrapping and cushioning you’ve packed in.
Criss-cross Items – When packing your items, arrange them in a criss-cross pattern. Don’t pile everything into a tower shape; instead, start with items near the side of the box and stack them around until all the space is used up. This way there is not pressure on one single spot, which ensures that space will not be wasted, and you can stuff the spaces with lighter items like pillows or cushions.
Label Boxes- When you’re preparing your things to go into storage, it is a good idea to pack and mark your boxes according to where they are going to go. This will help you stay organized and get unpacked quickly when moving your items out of storage.
Cover the floor – Most self storage units are outside, and changes in temperature can be dramatic, which can lead to condensation build ups that will damage your boxes and the contents inside. It also causes mold and mildew to grow. Cover the floor in a thick sheet of plastic prior to loading your items in, and then cover the items and boxes with breathable materials like an old comforter.
