Spring Lawn Care

Apr 3

With spring finally here, many homeowners are starting to think about spending more time outdoors. After a long, brutal winter, your yard may be looking a little worse for wear. April is National Lawn and Garden Month, so our friends at Gasper Landscape Design & Construction want to share some tips and tricks to turn your lawn into a gorgeous landscape! Discover the best type of care to give your lawn during the springtime so that it looks lush and inviting come summer.

What specific kind of lawn care should be done in the spring?

  • Conduct weed control. Pre-emergent weed control is a process designed to stop weeds from actively growing. This treatment can prevent crabgrass and other types of weeds from popping up during the late spring and summer.
  • Fertilize everything. Spring is one of the best times to fertilize your lawn. There are a variety of fertilizers on the market, each offering a different release rate ranging from slow to fast. In the spring, you want to use a fast release fertilizer. Because the weather is cooler and moister, your lawn will absorb the nutrients from the fertilizer more quickly. Throughout the summer, you’ll want to use a slow release fertilizer to keep your lawn healthier, longer. You’ll also want to provide your trees and shrubs with a fertility treatment during the spring. It’s best to inject fertilizer directly into the root systems of your plants to promote growth and vibrant color throughout the summer.
  • Repair any winter injuries. Throughout the winter, your lawn, plants, and shrubs have probably suffered some damage. They may appear brown, damaged, or desiccated. If you notice any type of damage, fertilizing can help trees and shrubs recover more quickly. Remove any dead, dry, or dying portions of your trees and shrubs, then fertilize for a quick recovery and lush growth.
  • Plant! Flowers, trees and other shrubbery help make houses look unique, vibrant and ready for the summer. Dahlias, Blanket Flowers, and Butterfly Bushes are an excellent addition to any landscape. The latter may even attract some beautiful butterflies to your garden throughout the season. Looking for a plant that offers a bit more? Tomatoes thrive in the summer – plant them now to yield a good crop.

To keep your lawn healthiest, it’s best to start your spring treatments as soon as the weather breaks. Cleaning up your yard during the spring months will give you more time to enjoy it throughout the summertime.
