How to Approach Your Kitchen Remodel

Aug 6

If you have one of those kitchens that lack flair or is a bit old and outdated, then it might be time for a makeover. Remodeling is an excellent opportunity to carve out a fantastic kitchen that transforms both your cooking and dining experience. You don’t need to spend a fortune while doing it, as long as you have the right approach.

Here’s how you should approach your kitchen remodel:

Get a Savvy Technician

The success of your remodeling project mostly lies with the technician you hire. You want someone who’s skilled and creative and lets you in on the process – someone who considers your ideas.

A savvy wood technician is invaluable in cutting down cost yet coming up with a final product you will love. Discuss your budget with your technician and find ways to stay within a prescribed cost.

Choose Materials Wisely

For cabinet doors, medium density fiberboards (otherwise known as MDF) are one of the best options and should be chosen over laminated chipboard for several reasons.

Although both have the same density and strength, MDF offers more leeway for design, and the edges of the board keep well with no need for laminate. This is in stark contrast to chipboard whose sides need to be covered by a laminate which more often than not peels off sooner rather than later.

MDF boards can come with a laminate or without a laminate. Grooved patterns can be made on the board and the unlaminated version can be painted or stained to suit various interior decor themes. Chipboards come as a laminated version only and cannot be grooved. In all fairness, both boards share one weakness, which is bloating should they come into contact with excess water.

If you’re finding any pest damage on your walls, such as possible termite damage, reach out to a pest control services company before installing cabinets.

Design

Kitchen design can be simple yet elegant. Install upper corner cabinets that are larger and longer than the rest to break up the monotony. Incorporating a glass door for such a cabinet adds to the aesthetics of the design.

Placing dim lights under the upper cabinets brings an element of allure to your kitchen. Granite or composite granite countertops paired with a unique sink and faucet will bring your kitchen design full circle.

Cabinet handles are another segment that adds to the aesthetic. These can range from simple knobs to more elaborate wooden, plastic, or steel handles. The Valley Design Team – Decorating Den Interiors say choose handles and pulls with character to show off your personality.

The Do-it-Yourself Approach

If the budget is minimal and you have a bit of know-how in carpentry, you may want to do a bit of kitchen remodeling yourself. You can also enlist the help of friends and family – to get things going and make it more fun!

Be sure to clear your schedule. You don’t want to be installing cabinets and hurrying because you need to do something else later on. Aside from the frustration you may start to feel from the time crunch, you’re also more susceptible to make errors in measurement. Nobody wants to walk into a room and see crooked cabinets. And remember, when installing things yourself, particularly cabinets, a tape measure and pencil or chalk are some of your best tools.

Remodeling a kitchen need not be expensive. A good technician can help you play around with various options in terms of materials and themes that result in a simple yet amazing kitchen concept without breaking the bank.
